Rebuilding an upper on a 270/280/290 Volvo stern drive is not for the do-it-yourselfer. However, the shift shaft has a tendency to leak, as the unit ages, and it is something that can be serviced without special tools.

While removing the cover #9, note the position of the shift shoe #12. Then, pin #5 must be removed before pin #4 so as to facilitate removal of #3, the eccentric.  Note that the detent ball #7 and the spring #8 will pop up when you remove the eccentric shaft from the cover.

The new oil seal comes as a kit with it's own set of instructions. Be sure to read them carefully. Basically the kit is only a new double-sided style seal designed to improve dependability.

Note: The head assembly and gears are removed only for display and it is not necessary to remove them just  to service the shift shaft seal.

When re-installing the assembly back into the housing, note that the shift shoe is slightly offset to one side and has to be installed facing the same direction it came out.
