Shielding the Voltage Regulator
Voltage regulators will sound much the same as ignition noise, varying with engine RPM. However, when the ammeter indicates full charge, the noise will not be heard. As the ammeter "cuts-back" to reduced charge, the noise will begin. Loading the battery by using lights, motors, etc. will cause the charging system to function. Turn off these loads, and when the battery is fully charged the charge rate will "cut-back" giving you a chance to Verify the noise source.
Install a .5 MFD by-pass capacitor (J) to the B+ (purple ) lead (K) of the voltage regulator. Solder capacitor lead (L) to the B+ lead of voltage regulator (tape to protect from moisture). Install the capacitor on the regulator(M) if possible. Add a shake proof type washer (N) between the bracket of the capacitor and the voltage regulator for a good ground connection. Clean engine ground where voltage regulator mounts to engine.
