The classic Generator/regulator diagram. 
The alternator replaced generators on automotive and marine engines, long ago. However, externally mounted mechanical regulators hung on for some time after the change over. Currently almost all regulators are built into the alternator.

Generators can also be dual-purposed as starters on some older sail boat engines. The wiring here does not depict this application.
