> TechQuestion: I AM WANTING TO DO ANNUAL PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE ON ENGINE AND THE MARINA SERVICE MANAGER IS RECOMMENDING THAT I REPLACE THE SEAWATER IMPELLER THAT PUMPS IN WATER TO COOL THE ENGINE . HE SAYS THAT IT SHOULD BE REPLACED EVERY OTHER YEAR TO KEEP FROM HAVING A SUDDEN BREAKDOWN AND CAUSING THE ENGINE TO OVERHEAT. HE WANTS $275 TO REPLACE. IS THIS A GOOD PREVENTIVE ITEM OR AM I JUST BEING FED A "LINE'?

> Our answer:

This service is recommended, at least, every other season. I have seen these pumps last twice as long but, as suggested, a seawater pump failure "can" occur without much warning. These pumps are not hard to service. If you install one of the new "one piece" water pump housing kits, even the novice mechanic can do one... (about $70 for the kit, replacement impellers for the kit about $27.)

Depending on shop labor rate, ease of access to the pump, (flat rate: 2 to 3 hours) and actual parts being replaced... the price quoted is in the ball park.
