> TechQuestion: Shifts into reverse
hard, grinds before going into gear. Forward works fine, wondering how and if cable
adjustment will help?
Our answer:
A cable adjustment may correct the problem but often
when the cable comes out of adjustment, by itself, there is usually another problem that
is causing this situation.
This includes but is not limited to loose shift linkages, a
cable that is going bad, corrosion in the shift pocket of the sterndrive, worn shift
linkage, worn shift spool, etc.
Engine shut off... Look for the shift cable attachment
point, on the engine and remove the nut and cotter pin which retains the cable. Try to
move the cable in and out with your fingers. It should move freely in and out with a light
hold on the cable with two fingers. If it doesn't, then additional service is called for.
The procedure for adjusting a cable is best dealt with by
acquiring a service manual. (The manual is the most powerful tool in your tool box.)
The manual covers adjustments for both, shift assisted
models and those without the shift assist piston. Besides the stern drive's
cable
adjustment, be sure to check the cable from the dash board for cable movement length. The
control box cam can wear out and the overall movement of the cable can be reduced. The
manual also covers the measurements necessary to test the control box cable throw.
