around the OMC sterndrive, and I need to replace it. Is there a manual I can refer to? How
much time is needed, and are special tools required? I am capable of doing, I need to see
the procedure though. Is Renken still around?
Our answer:
Renken merged with another boat builder and is mostly sold
on the east coast.
The boot replacement is a simple procedure. No
special tools required. You do not need to remove the drive to do this. The boot can be
carefully stretched over the drive.
Buy a new boot and look at it closely, you will note that
it is marked to go on only one way. This will help in understanding how to remove the old
one.
When installing the new one make sure that the
"top" is located properly, on top and line the holes of the metal ring with the
boot holes. The large hose clamp, that holds the boot to the transom housing, needs to fit
in the groove of the boot which fits neatly into a groove of the transom housing. Always
check to make sure the clamp and rubber boot are centered in the groove of the transom
assembly, both top and bottom. No sealer is needed around the transom assembly.
You should put a small amount of 3M 5200 sealer on the
fiberglass transom before screwing the boot to the transom. Start all of the screws into
the transom before tightening them, so that the boot and metal ring can be shifted, a bit,
to line up all the holes. Do not force the screws through the rubber if the holes do not
line up. Making new holes in the boot will most likely end up with a leak.
