> TechQuestion: The boat is rated for 185 HP. Currently the boat is powered by a GM 4cyl. I have a 289CI Ford motor in the garage collecting dust and am considering swapping out the 4cyl for something bigger , possibly the 289CI which is already paid for. The 289CI is from an old Ford Mustang and would need reconditioning and miscellaneous marine hardware but the project at first glance seems to be feasible and fun. What's your opinion and/or suggestion?

Our answer:

Even if you have a connection for discount marine parts, this type of conversion often gets very expensive. Manifolds, mounting hardware, marine grade electrical components, etc. could cost more than you have in the whole boat.

Sell or trade the 289 and find a marine engine that has all it's parts but needs rebuild. There are plenty out there. Often I recommend selling off the whole boat and find the one you want. It's just cost effective and your return on your sweat equity is better.

However, if you decide to give it a try... let me know. I can dig up some conversion specs for you.
