> TechQuestion: I JUST BOUGHT THIS BOAT AND IT'S MY FIRST ONE, AND
IF I HAVE TO PUT IT IN THE SHOP BEFORE I GET IT IN THE WATER FOR THE FIRST TIME, IT WILL
PROBABLY BE MY LAST. THE FRIEND I BOUGHT IT FROM TOOK US OUT ALL DAY WITHOUT A PROBLEM, A
LITTLE TUFF TO START BUT NOTHING TERRIBLE. NOW I CANT GET IT TO START WITHOUT TAKING OUT
THE PLUGS AND SQUIRTING GAS IN THE CHAMBERS, THIS TAKES A COUPLE OF TIMES BUT FINALLY RUNS
ON ITS OWN WITH NO PROBLEM, I CAN TURN IT OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON WITH NO PROBLEM BUT IF
IT SITS FOR ANY TIME, I WILL HAVE TO RESORT TO THE PLUGS AGAIN. WHAT'S UP? MY FRIEND SAID
IT HAD A TUNE UP LAST SPRING, IT SEEMS LIKE THE GAS ISN'T MAKING IT TO THE SPARK PLUGS, I
HAVE CHECKED THE GAS FILTER AND LINE TO THE 3 CARBS, THE GAS SEEMS TO FLOW FINE TO THAT
POINT, NOT REAL SURE FROM THAT POINT. HELP!!!! A DESPERATE BOATING WANNA BEEEE.
Our answer:
It sounds like your choke has stopped working. Lift the
cowl, turn the key to the "On" position, and then hit the choke switch. If the
choke flaps do not close completely and stay closed as long as you hold the choke switch,
then you need to look closely at this item. It could be a electrical problem from the dash
to the engine, the choke flaps could be out of adjustment, or the choke solenoid itself
could have gone bad.
Also, remember that the choke is manually operated and
opens as soon as you release the choke switch. So, during cold starting you have to hold
the choke switch, while you crank the engine over.
